Let’s face it: Gyms can be an intimidating place, especially if you are just starting out. Between the machines, dumbbells, and barbells, you don’t know where to begin. Is there an easier alternative? Something that combines intense exercise with the comfort of a knowledgeable instructor and the presence of other like-minded individuals? Of course there is! It is called a fitness class.

Fitness classes are a great way to get in shape, feel secure, and make friends. Best of all, you have many great options to choose from. Regardless of your choice, fitness classes will help you reach your fitness goals of weight loss, muscle gain, toning up, or just maintaining.

There are many types of fitness classes including aerobics

There are many types of exercise classes available. No matter what type of setting you prefer, you’re sure to find a class that you’ll love. Fitness classes have exploded in popularity! Chains and branches are popping up around the globe, offering fun and trendy classes.

A fitness class is more than just what you did back in school during your gym classes. It’s typically an hour long class, sometimes longer, that utilises a number of different exercises and training styles in order to help you develop strength, endurance, power, stability, and coordination. These exercise classes may be in the form of a traditional aerobics class, which involves a series of repetitive movements performed to music. Aerobics fitness classes may involve basic boxing motions, jump training, or dancing. The focus in these types of classes is typically on caloric burning via rhythmic motions. You’ll work up a sweat while having fun! Zumba, TaeBo, and Barre are all great examples of popular fitness classes. 

Strength focused fitness classes are also popular for their intensity

Fitness classes may also have a more strength-oriented focus. Exercise classes of this type are often based around compound movements, or exercises that activate the largest muscle groups. Squats, deadlifts, and overhead presses are just a few examples of the exercises you’ll see in a strength-based fitness class.

When entering a strength-based fitness class, keep in mind that you will be expected to perform exercises using your bodyweight, dumbbells, or barbells. Depending on your goal, the class may change dramatically. For instance, if your goal is to get toned and defined, the class that’s best for you may involve high levels of plyometrics, or jump training.

If your goal is muscle gain, the class for you may be an Olympic lifting exercise class. These classes may even remind you of your old gym classes, except with a much higher intensity. Examples of these types of classes include P90X and CrossFit.
